get Cotabby suggesting in a few minutes

Install Cotabby, grant the required macOS permissions, choose a local AI engine, and accept your first autocomplete suggestion on Mac.

Ghost text stays separate from the document until you accept it.

before you begin

  • Use a normal administrator or standard macOS account that can grant Privacy & Security permissions.
  • Keep 1–5 GB free if you plan to download a curated GGUF model.
  • Close any other system-wide autocomplete utility while testing Cotabby.

1. install Cotabby

The recommended Homebrew commands are:

brew tap FuJacob/cotabby
brew install --cask cotabby

Or download the latest disk image, drag Cotabby into Applications, and launch it there. The complete install and removal options are in the installation guide.

2. grant permissions

Accessibility and Input Monitoring are required. Screen Recording is optional and supplies extra nearby visual context. Cotabby opens the correct System Settings panes during onboarding.

Read what each permission enables before granting optional access.

3. choose an engine

Pick Apple Intelligence when it is available and you want no separate model download. Pick Open Source when you need macOS 14 compatibility or want direct control over the local GGUF model.

For Open Source, start with tabby-2-mini as the balanced option. Choose nano for lower memory use; try base or pro only when your Mac can keep their suggestions responsive.

See engines and local models for the full tradeoff table.

4. test a normal field

  1. 1. Open Notes or TextEdit.
  2. 2. Click a normal editable field and type a complete phrase.
  3. 3. Pause briefly after a word boundary.
  4. 4. Confirm gray ghost text appears beside the cursor.
  5. 5. Press Tab and confirm only the next word enters the document.

Testing a native field first separates global setup problems from one browser or editor's Accessibility behavior.

5. learn three keys

Tab
Accept the next suggested word.
Backtick
Accept the complete remaining suggestion.
Esc
Dismiss the suggestion. Continuing to type also dismisses it.

Every acceptance key is configurable. Continue with the shortcuts and acceptance guide.
